Overview of Madeira Island
An archipelago some 850KM from Lisbon, (just north of the Canary Islands), only two islands of the many in the archipelago are inhabited, Madeira and Porto Santo.Madeira Island is the cultural center of the two islands and also houses more of the civic life as the capital of the two islands Funchal is located here. Porto Santo however has A 6 mile long beach to offer to its fun loving tourists. The paradise island of Madeira, the pearl of the Atlantic, is quiet a floating garden. Volcanic ashes and demolished lava have given the island a rich soil.
Documentation Required

History of the Madeira Islands
The Islands were first discovered in 1419, accidentally discovered by the Portuguese when the two captains of Prince Henry the navigator were driven to islands by a storm. Being thankful for the islands after their shipwreck they named the first island Porto Santo meaning Holy Harbour, latter of the two islands was eventually named Madeira Island or ”Island of the Wood” after all the lush greenery and ample amount of vegetation found on the island. In the early 1400’s Madeira was known for sugar cane production as it was rare in Europe at the time, since the 17th centurysugar cane growth has shifted to south America and Madeira’s number one export became its wine.
